Classic astrology books define Vesi yoga as the presence of planets other than Rahu, Ketu, and the Moon in the 2nd house from the Sun. Likewise, Vasi yoga is the presence of those planets in the 12th house from the Sun. But, I am saying that these definitions are wrong! Absolutely wrong!

Ya… You heard me right. When the whole world of vedic astrology accepts these definitions, why am I advocating the opposite? It’s not me saying it, but the saptarishis themselves! And some old tamil astrology books say it too! Allow me to explain.

Saptarishi Nadi

Saptarishi Nadi is a collection of books containing discussions of horoscopes by the seven sages (saptarishis) and the consort of Lord Siva, Devi Parvati, herself. It is written in poetic form in the Tamil language. These books were compiled from palm manuscripts found in various parts of Tamilnadu, India, and published by the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library, Madras. Most importantly, they are a treasure house for those who want to analyze the predictions of the horoscopes by the ancient sages. I have discussed at length about this collection in the Saptarishi Nadi section. I have compiled the portions where the saptarishis put forth their arguments in favor of/against some of their predictions in the form of an eBook titled, “Elucidation of astrological predictions by saptarishis: Saptarishi Nadi, Aries ascendant collection.”

Vasi yoga

Horoscope 19 – Aries ascendant collection

Firstly, let us examine what the saptarishis say about Vasi yoga. In the eBook, horoscope 19, the following planetary position is described:

AscendantMarsSunSaturnRahuMercuryVenusJupiterMoonKetu

In this horoscope, the Sun is in Gemini and Saturn, Rahu, and Mercury are in Cancer. As for the yogas present in this horoscope, the sage says that the jataka enjoys Maal yoga and Vasi yoga:

கழறினோம் மால்யோகம் வாசியோகம்
We declare Maal yoga and Vasi yoga

I could not find any explanation for Maal yoga anywhere, but I did locate one for Vasi yoga. As the Sun is in Gemini, and the planets Saturn and Mercury are in the 2nd position from the Sun, obviously it should be Vesi yoga. right? No… The sage declares Vasi yoga!

But, this is not the only instance when the sages declare so, to discard this as an aberration or error.

Horoscope 48 too depicts Vasi yoga

In horoscope 48 in the eBook, the sages describe Vasi yoga for the following planetary position:

AscendantMoonJupiterVenusSunMercuryRahuMarsSaturnKetu
சொன்னனே வாசியோகம் மரகத யோகமொன்று
I describe Vasi yoga and Maragatha yoga

Certainly, the Sun is in Cancer and Mercury is in the 2nd position (Leo). Therefore, the sage declares Vasi yoga. Above all, he deviates from the classic definition of Vasi yoga.

Results of Vasi yoga

Sage Pulippani describes the results of Vasi yoga because of Mercury.

Planets in the 2nd position to the Sun Results of Vasi yoga
Mercury Saint, pauper

Vesi yoga

Secondly, if planets in the 2nd position from the Sun is called Vasi yoga, then planets in the 12th position from the Sun should be Vesi yoga. But, is there any confirmation for this?

Horoscope 5 – Aries ascendant collection

In horoscope 5 in the eBook, the planetary position described is:

AscendantRahuJupiterMoonMarsSaturnKetuVenusMercurySun

The sage declares various yogas for this jataka.

வந்தவன் பொதுயோகத்தை வரைகிறோம் கேதாரயோகம்
சந்ததம் வேசியோகம் சங்குசக் கரயோகங்கள்
We say the general yogas for the jataka: Kedara yoga,
Vesi, and Sanguchakra yogas

Here, Venus is in Capricorn and the Sun is in Aquarius; so, the sage declares Vesi yoga. Certainly, Vesi yoga is formed when the planets are in the 12th position from the Sun.

Horoscope 5 – Virgo ascendant collection

Better still, in the Virgo ascendant collection, horoscope 5, verse 22, the sage actually ends up defining Vesi yoga.

VenusSunMercuryMarsKetuAscendantMoonJupiterSaturnRahu
Please tell the details of the yoga.
As Venus is in the 12th position from the Sun, we declare Vesi yoga.
Its results are that he will obtain wealth and land.

The sages cannot clarify Vesi yoga any better. Firstly, they have clearly defined Vesi yoga; therefore, there is no possibility of any iota of doubt. Secondly, they have described its effects: Vesi yoga because of Venus provides land and wealth to the jataka.

Likewise, tamil astrology books like Veemaesura Ullamudaiyan (வீமேசுர உள்ளமுடையான்) and Kumaraswamiyam (குமாரசுவாமியம்) too define Vesi yoga as planets in the 12th position from the Sun.

You may ask what’s in a name. Well… names indicate the character of a yoga. For instance, வேசி (vesi; pronounced ‘vaesi’) means a whore; வாசி (vasi; pronounced ‘vaasi’) means preferable or excellent, in addition to other meanings. Clearly, that makes a world of difference.

Results of Vesi yoga

I have presented here the results of Vesi yoga as discussed by saptarishis and sage Pulippani.

Planets in the 12th position to the SunResults of Vesi yoga
MercuryFamous, wealthy
MarsWill have many children
SaturnWill inherit property, house; womaniser; longevity = 80yrs
VenusProperty, land, wealth
Jupiter + Venus (Paalai yoga)Poet, well educated, longevity = 88 yrs

Conclusion

To sum up, Saptarishis redefine Vasi and Vesi yoga:

However, many might find it difficult to accept what is discussed here. In other words, if they are to accept these new (actually very old!) definitions, what happens to the definitions found in classical Sanskrit astrological books? Are we to discard those definitions, and by extension, discredit the sources themselves? I too have confronted this dilemma in this page.

Please note that the saptarishis used a tropical zodiac with sidereal nakshatras — which I have established conclusively in another article — and the rules discussed in Saptarishi Nadi were intended for interpretation of a chart computed with tropical zodiac, as opposed to sidereal zodiac.
